Adding Oil to Our Lamps
President Spencer W. Kimball

spencerkimball.jpgIn the parable, oil can be purchased at the market. In our lives the oil of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living. Attendance at sacrament meetings adds oil to our lamps, drop by drop over the years. Fasting, family prayer, home teaching, control of bodily appetites, preaching the gospel, studying the scriptures--each act of dedication and obedience is a drop added to our store. Deeds of kindness, payment of offerings and tithes, chaste thoughts and actions, marriage in the covenant for eternity--these, too, contribute importantly to the oil with which we can at midnight refuel our exhausted lamps.
(President Kimball, Faith Precedes the Miracle, p. 256)

Spiritual Goal: Have at least one bottle of consecrated oil always in your home. Invite your Home Teachers to come and prepare this for you.

We recommend 2.5 quarts of oil per person for a 3-month supply. Coconut oil and Olive oil are both great healthy choices. Three quarts of Coconut oil can be purchased at Winco for about $12.

These lamp parts can be purchased through Lehmans. Burning olive oil with these wicks held in a pint canning jar with handle burn bright and clean.

Did You Know: Oil that has gone bad (rancid) – can be used for lamp oil.

Temporal Goal: Have at least a 3 month supply of oil for your family.  Consider purchasing an oil-burning lamp.
