Relief Society Preparedness Challenges – Milk and Water August 2015

August is the end of summer, when we are thinking about canning or freezing the garden produce, sending our kids back to school, and all those fun outdoor activities are nearly over. It is also a very dry month in Utah. August is generally the second driest month of the year in Utah. Thirsty yet?

While we like to think we live in the “land of milk and honey”, neither milk nor water are in abundant supply in an emergency.

Storing milk is easy in its dry, powdered state. Here’s a surprising fact. There is actually powdered milk out there that isn’t REAL milk. I don’t know about you but if I’m making milk from a powder, I want it to be REAL.

The following link provides lots of information about powdered milk and the best types to buy or use.

Water is absolutely necessary to survive. However storage is very important. The following link provides information about different types of storage for water as well as about purification of water.

Temporal Challenge
If your water and milk storage are in great shape maybe you could, as our Stake Presidency have suggested “get water to the end of the row”, by helping a neighbor think about working on theirs. Take an ice cold bottle of water to your sisters that you visit. It tastes great and it’s a good way to start a conversation about water storage. And in case you are wondering where you are going to store that 55-gallon drum of water, change the thought process and buy cases of bottled water to store instead. If you find a great sale you can buy a couple of cases of water for less than $5. If plain, old water sounds boring, jazz it up with fruit liquid or powder flavorings.

Spiritual Challenge
Just as the physical body needs water to continue living so does the spirit. The Savior is the
water needed by the spiritual part of man. Without Him the soul will eventually die. The soul is
thirsty and we try to quench that thirst with many things that satisfy for a while, but eventually
we get thirsty again. The only thing that can truly quench the thirst of the spirit is the living
water, Jesus Christ. Feed the soul by feasting on or drinking the words of the Lord. The
challenge for this month is to find more ways to refresh your soul with the living water. What
can you do in five minutes? While riding in the car, sitting on a plane or at an airport, waiting
for someone at dance or baseball, doctors and dentist appointments --- listen to the scriptures on
your phone or a CD, read them on your phone, or in the actual book. Best five minutes of your
day!
